DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering has an open PhD position in the field of precision injection moulding of micro-nano structured surfaces integrated on the surface of steel moulds and advanced process/product quality assurance methodologies. The project is closely connected to industrial case studies through collaborative activities of the large Danish project MADE DIGITAL coordinated by the Manufacturing Academy of Denmark.

The present research project will be carried out at the section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, micro/nano manufacturing, metrology on all scales (macro, meso, micro, nano) as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities and tasks
It is the ambition of the project to develop and implement a complete process chain for the establishment of micro-nano structures on the surface of steel moulds. The tooling process chain will be validated on advanced precision moulded products with micro/nano structured surfaces by polymer injection moulding.

The project will require the development of a systematic approach that design and integrates process simulation, dimensional and geometrical metrology (across several length scales), advanced process analysis and optimization, statistical analysis, measurement uncertainty modelling, assessment and application to tolerance verification at the micro/nano dimensional scale.

The required know-how is identified in the following project objectives: 

  • Development of tooling process chains for the establishment micro/nano structured surfaces on mould steel for enhanced tool performance (lifetime and replication capability)
  • Development of the precision moulding technology the manufacture of precision plastic components with micro/nano structured surfaces for enhanced part performance (optical and functional properties)
  • Development of traceable methods allowing for metrology and tolerance verification across several length scales on both tools and moulded components.
  • Development of simulation protocols for the digital validation of the process chain (establishment and validation of the process fingerprint).

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
