DTU Mechanical Engineering in cooperation with NTNU Department of Marine Technology has an open PhD position in the field of marine hydrodynamics. The PhD project will address modelling of dynamic forces on the propeller and on the ship operating in waves. This PhD study is under the Double Doctorate Degree (cotutelle) agreement between NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and DTU (Technical University of Denmark).

Responsibilities and tasks
The elements of ship propulsion include the ship hull, the propeller and the engine. Traditionally these three elements were considered more or less separately and mainly in calm water. But the ship operates in waves that induce motions, give a time-varying inflow and load on the propeller that again interacts with the engine. In recent years more focus is on these interaction phenomena, both with application of theory and numerical simulation and by experiments.   

The emphasis in this project is to study the interaction of ship, propeller and engine in waves. Of particular interest is the development of an improved method for calculation the flow behind the ship in waves and with operating propeller. Relevant model tests in calm water and in waves are planned, including tests with a self-propelled, free-sailing vessel.

At the end of the project the performance of ship, propeller and engine in waves and in full scale will be examined. Normal service conditions will be considered as well as slow-steaming and engine overloads. The simulation will also comprise cases for which full-scale measurements of engine and propeller performance are available.   

The project will be done in close cooperation with a PhD project in marine machinery under the common title “Ship propulsion dynamics and emissions”. (link to the PhD utlysning for Marine Machinery).

The work on theory and computer simulations will be done mainly while the candidate is at DTU whereas model tests will be done at NTNU.

Candidates must have a master degree in mechanical engineering or naval architecture, both with a specialization in ship or marine hydrodynamics.  

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU or NTNU. Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.   

This PhD study is under the Double Doctorate Degree (cotutelle) agreement between NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and DTU (Technical University of Denmark). DTU will be the home institution that will handle all the administrative and financial aspects of the joint education. DTU will enroll the candidate in one of its PhD programmes and nominate the main supervisor. NTNU will be the host institution and will enroll the candidate in the Marine Technology PhD programme. The candidate must spend a minimum of one year at each of the two institutions.

At DTU the present research project will be carried out at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the maritime group of the Section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering. The department covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within the field of mechanics, including mechanical properties of materials, strength and vibration analyses, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, safety theory and control engineering. 

The research of the maritime group includes among other topics ship propulsion. We have dealt with flows over high-efficiency propulsors and now focus is on ship-propeller interaction, so far in calm water, where we develop methods for detailed flow calculations to predict the effective wake field, pressure pulses and other phenomena of ship-propeller interaction.

At NTNU the present research project will be carried out at Department of Marine Technology (IMT). The department educates and conducts research about methods and techniques which facilitate the assessment and development of technical and operational solutions for Norway's biggest export industries: oil and gas extraction at sea, ship technology with corresponding equipment industry, fisheries technology and aquaculture technology.

The research and education at IMT emphasize the development of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions within a number of areas, including propellers and propulsion. Propulsion of ships in waves is an important research topic at IMT with development and application of both theoretical methods and model tests, and several PhD studies have been completed within this topic.
