DTU Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Researcher in Numerical Modelling of Additive Manufacturing.

DTU Mechanical Engineering is contributing to research, innovation and teaching within the following areas: Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Engineering Design and Product Development, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Thermal Energy.

The Researcher will be attached to the Manufacturing Engineering Section.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position includes research, research-based education and innovation in numerical modelling of additive manufacturing. Research fields include: 

  • Numerical and experimental analysis of additive manufacturing with focus on – but not limited to - 3D metal printing metal processes like SLM and SLS.
  • Statistical process analysis as well as optimization of 3D metal printing using advanced numerical models
  • Investigating the correlation between manufacturing conditions and in-service properties (e.g. corrosive and wear) of 3D printed metal parts based on process simulation
  • Digitalization of process chains related to additive manufacturing including coupling between sensor technology and the digital twin

The candidate is expected to take part in teaching in additive manufacturing at BSc, MSc and PhD level. Co-supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students will be an integral part of the role.

The candidate is expected to be involved in applications for external funding in collaboration with other research institutions as well as industrial companies.

The candidate is expected to be actively involved in project management tasks in relation to large projects (national as well as EU) at the department.

Qualifications
Candidates must 

  • hold an MSc and a PhD degree (or equivalent) within mechanical engineering
  • have a strong background in additive manufacturing – both theoretically as well as experimentally
  • have good knowledge of laser based manufacturing processes, especially SLM and SLS.
  • have a broad background in multiphysics simulation of manufacturing processes
  • have good knowledge of statistical process analysis and optimization.Assessment 
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to 
  • scientific production and research potential at international level
  • innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
  • the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
  • experience in teaching
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of internal and external cooperation
Consideration will also be given to: 
  • The candidate must have a broad foundation within metal additive manufacturing
  • Furthermore the candidate must document experience in development of advanced numerical codes for metal additive manufacturing
  • The candidate must have significant experience in collaboration with external partners in large research projects

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The position as researcher is a position as part of which the employee after a maximum of 4 years transfers to a position as senior research scientist provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and is deemed qualified. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
