DTU Mechanical Engineering has an open PhD position in the field of Additive Manufacturing Enabled Process Chains. The PhD project which is anchored at the Section for Manufacturing Engineering, aim to advance an integrated Additive Manufacturing Enabled Process Chain by which High Resolution Photo-polymerization and Metal Powder Sintering allows for the manufacture of high precision metal components.
Responsibilities and tasks
Additive Manufacturing(AM) allows for the direct manufacture of highly complex components, yet most industrially available AM machine tools are limited to a select amount of proprietary process materials with tolerancing and surface quality linked directly to the choice of process material and corresponding machine tool.
The scientific goal of this PhD project is to do in with the limited surface quality and dimensional tolerancing yielded by metal powder-bed fusion methods, by introducing a new AM enabled process chain. Through this process chain, high fidelity photopolymer AM technologies are used to prescribe the geometry and surface of the manufactured component, after which a powder sintering process is used to consolidate metal powder to solid matter.
The project aims to bring this new process chain to a state of industrial application and to benchmark its capabilities against existing direct powder-bed based consolidation methods. The candidate will be part of a larger consortium, constituted by several industrial and academic partners. This calls for soft skills such as collaborative skills and the ability to engage across multiple stakeholders within the project.
The candidate’s skills are:
- M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Material Science or similar.
- Collaborative skills; ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group
- Excellent English Proficiencies, written and spoken
The candidate’s knowledge is therefore:
- Knowledge within AM processes and their integration in process chains.
- Knowledge of powder consolidation methods and in the crystallography of metals.
- Knowledge in the survey of process materials such as photopolymers and powders for the use in sintering processes.
- Skills in mechatronics and within machine construction and design.
- Knowledge of optical systems, especially for mask projection and laser scanning.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Researcher David Bue Pedersen.

The present research project will be carried out at the Mechanical Engineering department section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, product and process quality control technologies and data analytics, as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching are based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.
