The present position is anchored at the DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, at the section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, product and process quality control technologies and data analytics, as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching are based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.

The Additive Manufacturing group at the MPP section of DTU Mechanical Engineering has a vacant 2-year position as a postdoc within Additive Manufacturing. The postdoc project aims through the MADE Digital initiative (http://en.made.dk) to establish methodologies for applying metal additive manufacturing as strategic processes in conventional process chains. Focus will be on barriers to industrial implementation and validation of suitability. Research will establish precision, accuracy, process capability and industrial integration of additive manufacturing as direct production technology of near- to net-shape products.

Responsibilities and tasks
The postdoc will be working in the bounds of academic research and corporate industrial implementation of Metal Additive Manufacturing in order to advance where Metal Additive Manufacturing can be applied within conventional process chains. These process chains can be regarded either as the process chain in which Metal Additive is deployed for the manufacture of near-net geometry and the subsequent finishing of said component or any process chain where a Metal Additive Manufacturing component is used; e.g. for the manufacture of tooling systems, jigs, fixtures etc. By virtue hereof, the postdoc must: 

  • Have a strong background in Additive Manufacturing, its industrial implementation as well as NC manufacturing technologies
  • Have a strong knowledge of related technologies such as NC Machining, Polishing, Hot Isostatic Pressing and Electric Discharge Machining.
  • Have knowledge in the field of Geometrical Metrology, Quality Assurance and Characterization.
  • Performance Metrics for Manufacturing.
  • Engineering Statistic.

The MADE Digital initiative, the framework in which this postdoc project is offered, is a vast research consortium that amass an exclusive collaboration between some of the most innovative companies and institutions that Denmark is renowned for world-wide.

MADE arose to strengthen the Danish manufacturing ecosystem through applied research, development and innovation. By virtue hereof, the postdoc must: 

  • Hold an aptitude for collaboration and communication, given that the project is constructed over multiple partners and related projects.
  • Have a strong knowledge the industrial implementation of Additive Manufacturing
  • Possess excellent skills for knowledge transfer and documentation as you will be required to transfer your knowledge to industrial partners.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

You are expected to hold a PhD degree or equivalent within Mechanical Engineering or likewise related to Additive Manufacturing. It is expected that you have conducted previous research related to industrial collaboration or obtained collaborative skills from similar experience; ability to work independently, possess the stills to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group. Excellent English Proficiencies, written and spoken are obligatory.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years, starting as soon as possible.
