The section for Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an ERC Starting Grant (project acronym: UniEqTURB) sponsored opening for a 3-year PhD position in the area of Experimental and Theoretical turbulence.

Within the scope of the project, the student will conduct high-end experiments in collaboration with international world-leading experts (with the possibility of a dual PhD-degree). The student will analyze the data in novel ways to test the validity of the existing theories of turbulence and together with the group members attempt to synthesize new theory based on the empirical results. The measurements will be conducted using the latest developments in optical flow diagnostics for turbulence measurements, including Particle Tracking/Image Velocimetry. The ERC grant sponsors two additional PhD students and a PostDoctoral fellow.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD student will be responsible for 

  • acquisition, processing and analysis of the measurement data
  • dissemination of the results in scientific journal publications and conferences
The PhD student may also be involved in 
  • improved designs of the experiments,
  • big data management
  • automation of the experimental setup & measurement equipment.
These activities will all be conducted in collaboration with international partners that will co-advice and support the student in parallel with the main supervision.

The student is, however, at the same time expected to be able to work independently and take ownership of, and responsibility towards, the project, to be able to carry out the tasks. The position is likely to involve co-supervision of Master’s-students.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. A master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mathematics, (engineering) physics or similar is advantageous.

It is required that the candidate can document that the candidate is well acquainted with practical lab work and has experience with independent successful laboratory work in general. Experience with optical measurement techniques is a significant advantage.

The PhD-candidate must be able to work as part of a team and support other team members, with the benefit of a team that also supports the candidate, when necessary.

The candidate must also have (an interest in developing) mathematical skills as a part of the PhD-programme. Relevant courses e.g. in functional analysis and differential geometry will be made available as a part of the PhD study plan as well as informal knowledge sharing within the research group framework.

The candidate must have experience with programming and data analysis and experience with handling large datasets is an advantage, as is experience with automating experimental setups.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
