The Section for Manufacturing Engineering at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, invites applications for an appointment as researcher. The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

The Section for Manufacturing Engineering (MPP) performs theoretical, numerical and experimental research in the field of manufacturing engineering. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes and modeling approaches, metrology at all scales, micro/nano manufacturing, and additive manufacturing. The research is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, solid and fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics in the analysis, modeling and development of manufacturing processes.

The scientific domain of the position is within Precision Tooling processes for zero defect manufacturing. Within this area, the focus is on surface generation in machining processes for optimization of the quality of precision engineering components such as moulds and dies. The research includes high fidelity modelling of surface generation by machining processes, the development of process chains for multi-material moulds with high performance requirements as well as the development and implementation of on-the-machine and in-line characterization of part geometry and surface quality.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be working in close collaboration with the scientific staff at the Section and with academic and industry partners. 

You will be responsible for leading and conducting research activities on modelling of surface generation in machining and on validation of approaches for in line and on the machine part characterization.
Specific responsibilities and tasks will include the following: 

  • Development and validation of numerical and analytical models of surface topography generation in machining processes
  • Modelling the effect of tool-workpiece interaction on the phenomena determining the formation and topography of new surfaces in machining processes
  • Implementation of solutions for automatic, in-line defect detection on mould surfaces
  • Development and implementation of strategies for defect avoidance/minimization and correction in machining processes
  • Engage actively in project management and preparation of funding applications related to the field of research
  • Contribute to supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students
  • Take part in teaching activities within courses in manufacturing engineering at master and PhD level, including the preparation of lectures and laboratory exercises.
Candidates must hold a PhD degree in manufacturing engineering (or equivalent) with documented experience in the following areas: 
  • Modelling of Surface Generation in machining
  • Precision and diamond machining
  • Machining system performance characterization
  • On machine and in line workpiece and tool characterization
  • An overall knowledge of process chains for precision moulds manufacturing
  • Preparation of funding applications at national and European level
  • Participation in teaching activities
  • Student supervision

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment. More information can be found here:
