Traditionally product decisions and manufacturing decisions have been handled separately both in research and in industry. There are however significant benefits of aligning them such as reduced investment, increased efficiency, improved quality, reduced ramp up time etc.

The main objective of this research area is to develop digital design and manufacturing models that support conceptual decisions in product development. The models shall enable that alternative product designs and manufacturing designs can be evaluated in terms of e.g. lead time, cost, efficiency and line balancing effects. The models shall be able to show consequences of changing structural decisions in the product design and manufacturing design. This could be production line layout, degree of automation, number of assembly directions assembly sequence etc.

It is the intention that application initially shall focus on electro mechanical products with many parts and/or significant manufacturing investments e.g. wind turbines, ship engines, power plants, vehicles and medical measurement equipment.

Responsibilities and qualifications
It expected that the researcher is self-driven and can establish the above area and built up an international recognized research group within the field f of digital design and manufacturing.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop digital design models and manufacturing models that can be utilized in commercial PDM/PLM, CAD, CAE and manufacturing simulation software
  • Identify and describe good alignment principles between product and manufacturing design
  • Develop cost, lead time and investment models that enables that different product design and manufacturing design alternatives can be evaluated
  • Establish industrial cooperation that will enable testing of the digital models and lead to funding of further research
  • Attract external funding

Qualifications:

  • Research experience within engineering design and product development
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and manufacturing engineering
  • Knowledge of industrial state of the art CAD, PDM/PLM and manufacturing simulation systems
  • Knowledge of operations management
  • Ability to work cross disciplinary e.g. within: the section of Engineering Design and Product development, across other sections within DTU Mechanical Engineering and DTU Departments and externally
  • Ability to establish industrial cooperation that will enable testing of the digital models and lead to funding of further research
  • Ability to define a research area and attract external funding

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicants qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union. DTU Mechanical Engineering covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Energy Systems and Energy Conversion, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Design and Product Development. The Department has a scientific staff of about 135 persons, 100 PhD students and a technical/administrative support staff of about 80 persons.
