The section for Manufacturing Engineering (MPP) at DTU Mechanical Engineering has two open PhD positions within the application of industrial sensorics, data analytics and multiphysics modelling in I4.0 production lines.

The PhD projects are anchored within the framework of the national project MADE FAST funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. The MADE FAST project is a major national initiative comprising a network of 50 companies, 5 universities and 3 research institutes in Denmark pursuing the goals of Industry4.0. The two PhD scholarships are placed in the context of the Work Stream 4 “Digitalization of Manufacturing Processes” which includes 11 PhD students working on related projects and offers unique opportunities with respect to high level training in a multinational and multicultural environment. The PhD students will work in close industrial collaboration to implement next-gen sensor technologies on state-of-the art production lines. This encompasses the physical sensor integration into the production line, initial data shaping and -filtering to ensure data integrity, storage of data in a tailored storage pool and subsequent application of data via data analytics including machine learning and as input to multi-scale, multi-physics models describing material behaviour during processing.  The main industrial collaboration partners are LEGO and Beckhoff Automation.

Responsibilities and tasks
In-situ data collection within manufacturing engineering allows for an efficient physical to digital transformation of the processing conditions of a manufacturing system. Its strategic collection and targeted application are integral elements for a company’s adoption of I4.0.

The two vacant positions will collaborate across projects in establishing a seamless integration of sensors onto a new and novel manufacturing system. The system employs a roll-roll transfer fabrication method for agile manufacturing of thermoplastic components. Given its novel principle of operation, a thorough system’s analysis will decompose the system into its constituents that each must be fundamentally understood before sensor integration can be commenced. This activity will be joint, across the two PhD positions after which

PhD#1 will assume ownership of the physical integration of selected sensors on the system,
and

PhD#2 will assume ownership of the development of multiphysics models of the different process steps in the manufacturing chain.

T
he two PhD projects will be carried out in close collaboration with a third PhD project anchored at DTU Compute in which the analysis of the collected data is the overall theme.

The ultimate goal is establishing a fast, near real-time, data assisted model-based digital twin of the entire manufacturing chain.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.


Candidates with a relevant master's degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering, physics or applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. Good knowledge of either production engineering technologies, instrumentation, automation and/or process modelling and simulation is considered an advantage. Moreover, the candidate should have good mathematical/analytical skills in general as well as good communication skills including excellent English proficiency both written and spoken.

In the application, the candidate should indicate which of the two PhD projects he/she is mainly interested in.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
