The Materials and Surface Engineering section in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking candidate for a PhD position in the field of Aluminium corrosion. The PhD position is for a period of 3 years.

Research background
Aluminium alloys are seen as future materials for industrial applications, such as for transport (e.g. aerospace, automotive), building, packaging etc. due to lightweight.  Recycling of aluminium is important for its enhanced applications to reduce the cost, as it needs only 5%-10% of the total energy compared to production of primary aluminium. Recycled aluminium alloy microstructure is complex and therefore have significant influence on corrosion and other properties due to the presence of higher levels of impurity elements such as Fe combined with the formation of intermetallics in combination with other alloying elements. The fundamental mechanisms of the impact of impurities and microstructure on the initiation and propagation of localized corrosion in recycled aluminium alloys is still not well understood.

Responsibilities and tasks
Consequently, research activities in the intended PhD position will focus on the following issues:  

  • The effect of intermetallics on the early pit-initiation by performing electrochemical analysis combined with microscopic characterization techniques, Synchrotron methods etc. on model alloys.
  • Multiphysics simulation of microstructure and early corrosion development.
  • In-situ analysis of pit initiation and propagation using microscopic and tomography methods.
The selected candidate is expected to work closely with other researchers involved in the project. Project will be in collaboration with University of Lund, Sweden, and Hydro Aluminium, Norway. Work involves some level of co-ordination and travel.

Qualifications
Candidates for the position should have a MSc degree in Materials Engineering or Chemistry with experience within the field of microstructure and corrosion. Prior experience to aluminium alloy microstructure and corrosion, characterization methods etc. will be an advantage. Combination of knowledge in corrosion and materials is preferred. 

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
